These works are part of an ongoing series of ceramic wall hanging sculptures, Consistent Way Back.

The series is inspired by how our economic system shapes people’s lives, often from a young age. Using public playground slides as my starting point, I squeeze, pull, twist, poke, and agitate their forms to make them mutated and bloated.

No longer pristine or familiar, the forms morph. They are distorted by the struggles to move through our economic system, and the impact of it’s weight on our soft bodies.

I’m drawn to playground slides as a source of inspiration because they are familiar to my youth. For a time, slides gave a sense of immense freedom. Yet their architecture is specifically designed to move us between two fixed points, informing us where to climb up and coast down. No matter how many times we slide, if we follow the steps up and chute down, we repeatedly begin and end at the same points.
